Burning Smell From Dryer in West Hollywood: When to Stop Using It
A burning smell from your dryer in West Hollywood is a clear stop sign. Most of the time it is hot lint trapped near a heat source because the vent is clogged. Sometimes it is an electrical or motor issue inside the dryer. Either way, stop using the dryer until the cause is found.
What you may notice
You start a load. After ten or fifteen minutes, you smell something. Hot lint, scorched fabric, sometimes a sharper hot rubber smell. The dryer is still running. You are not sure if you should stop or finish the cycle.
Stop. A burning smell is the dryer telling you something is wrong. It will not get better by itself. The smell almost always points to one of two things: lint that is being heated where it should not be, or a dryer part that is overheating.
Possible causes
- Lint buildup near the heating element. When the vent is restricted, hot air pushes lint into corners and onto the heating element area. That lint heats up and gives off a burning smell.
- Lint under the lint screen housing. A torn lint screen lets fine lint drop down where it can sit on hot surfaces.
- Clogged vent causing the dryer to overheat. The whole dryer runs hotter than it should. Plastic parts, rubber seals, and trapped lint can all start to smell.
- Worn drive belt or motor bearing. A failing belt rubbing on metal gives a hot rubber smell. A worn motor bearing can give a hot oil smell.
- Foreign object in the drum. A crayon, a piece of tape, a tissue with something on it. Less common, but it happens.
- Electrical issue. Wiring problems inside the dryer can cause burning insulation smells. These are serious.
How I check it
The first thing I want to know: was the dryer being used when the smell started, or did it appear from the room itself?
- Lint screen check. I look at the screen for tears or buildup under the screen housing.
- Back of the dryer. I pull the dryer forward and look. Burning marks, melted plastic, or signs of heat damage are red flags.
- Transition hose. I check it for crushing or holes.
- Wall vent opening. I disconnect the dryer from the vent and check for lint packed against the inside of the duct.
- Airflow test. I check the exterior vent to see how restricted the path is.
- Full vent cleaning. I clean the line and clear the exterior cap.
- Recheck. If the smell continues after a thorough cleaning, the source is inside the dryer. I tell the client that part needs appliance service, not vent service.
What you can do before service
- Stop the cycle as soon as you smell something.
- Unplug the dryer for electric dryers. For gas dryers, turn off the gas valve if you know how to do it safely.
- Open the lint screen and check for tears or heavy buildup.
- Look behind the dryer if you can do it safely. Any visible lint piles on the floor or wall? Any smell coming from inside the duct opening?
- Do not run another cycle to test if the smell goes away.
When to stop using the dryer
This is one of the topics where I do not give middle-ground advice. Stop using the dryer right now if:
- The burning smell appears during any cycle
- You see smoke of any kind
- The dryer body feels very hot
- The smell is sharp, like burning plastic or rubber
- There is a gas smell (for gas dryers, this is an emergency — leave the area, do not turn switches on or off, and call your gas company first)
Continuing to run the dryer with a burning smell is the main scenario where dryer fires happen. A clean vent and a working dryer never smell like burning. If you smell it, treat it as a real warning.
